This study intends to achieve a thorough observation of the origins, delays and advances in the development of a conservative awareness concerning the remains of the past throughout the Mediterranean Arch, and especially the Valencian area. It also underlines how the conveniences and restrictions that are characteristic of a specific period are a direct results of a dominant ideology, and how these ideologies influenced the attitudes towards ancient remains throughout history to eventually transform their meaning by favouring either conservation or destruction.
