The conservation problems of art on paper result from internal and external causes of deterioration, i.e., the way the particular sheet of paper was manufactured and the way it was cared for. Mounting, matting, and framing materials cause the greatest damage, acid migration; these commonly used but chemically unstable materials include inexpensive wood pulp mat board, corrugated cardboard, rubber cement, animal glue, certain synthetic adhesives in mountings and tape, etc. Detailed and illustrated guidelines indicate proper mounting, matting, and framing materials and techniques, followed by a description of measures designed to minimize environmental hazards such as light, temperature, humidity, and pollution.
