The article discusses various plant fibers used by the artist, how they are extracted from plant materials and the beating methods used for pulping, including the uses of hand pounding mallets and the ball mill. Also included are descriptions of alternative methods of Nepalese/ Indian and Japanese sheet formation, and alternate couching and drying techniques. Methods of using plant flbers for deep and shallow casting in wood, metal and plaster molds are also discussed. The article further describes the special advantages of Oriental sheet forming techniques that enable the artist to work in, on, and under the surface using translucent pulps containing mucilage for a collage approach to art without glue. A description is also given of how water patterned imagery in paper can be obtained by spraying water over resist plates onto the newly made paper surface. -- AATA
