Abstract
The restoration of old or damaged globes is complicated and requires the conbined work method of an artist acquainted with the restoration of paintings and graphics. The old layers of varnish must be removed; the object cleaned of dirt, water and mould stains; damages in the ground material - chalk or papier-maché, the print and colouring repaired; loose parts and blisters under the paper layer fixed, which demands great experience. Moist and gaseous chemical procedures must be applied with caution and sense of responsibility; subsequent neutralisations carried out with great pedantry, in order not to provoke later and more serious damages by the removal of the existing ones. The methods applied in the restoration department of the Austrian National Library are described in a separate article.
