Catalog on the occasion of exhibition of Albert Pinkham Ryder, organized by the National Museum of American Art, and shown there as well as at the Brooklyn Museum, presents general background on the life of the artist. The chapter entitled A New Society for Art' briefly mentions painting techniques and materials; footnotes provide significant technical information. In the chapter, Chaos Bewitched,' there is further description of techniques and materials. X-ray radiography and autoradiography have established methods to distinguish authentic Ryder paintings. Artist's intent is indicated; in one instance, documentation cites Ryder wanting glass sheets over paint surface to prevent tacky surface from touching or rubbing. Past treatments are mentioned for preserving the paintings; removal from support, removal of viscous materials from underlayer, and reattachment to new support; or cleaning, filling, and inpainting. Disputed spoils' discusses the proliferation of forgeries; research has demonstrated that the original paintings tend to show an underlying visible composition when x-rayed. Individual catalog entries contain synopses of information from conservation reports and technical analyses when available; footnotes provide useful technical information.
