Abstract
In advance of installation of steps for visitor access to the Upper Roman Adit, excavations revealed very complex evidence for recutting. The mining adit originally driven through barren rock in search of a lode was partly cut away by an access tunnel, and exploitation of the cavernous stope followed. No dating evidence was found, though toolmarks indicate cutting work before the regular use of blasting in later 17th century.
