Abstract
Recent preservation efforts at Pompeii have concentrated on removing many of the materials employed in previous conservation treatments that have had harmful long-term effects. A frequently used material was reinforced concrete, which absorbs atmospheric humidity, oxidizing the iron reinforcing rods, and causing them to split. The present treatments use natural materials, such as wood and terra cotta.
