Abstract
The Potsdam obelisk was erected in 1753-1755 according to a design by G.W. von Knobelsdorff in a classical baroque style reminiscent of (earlier) Egyptian examples. The marble material used stood up poorly from the beginning to weather conditions and hence required repairs on a permanent basis. After its destruction in World War II the remnants of the obelisk were removed but in 1978-1980 it was reconstructed. -- AATA
