Abstract
During the examination and treatment of two portraits by William and Richard Jennys belonging to the Connecticut Historical Society, paint cross sections revealed original surface coatings still to be present. The present study describes two novel microchemical examination techniques used to help characterize the coatings, as well as the enzyme and detergent systems used to recover the original, undiscolored, still-varnished surfaces. -- AATA
