Abstract
A number of advances used by conservators in the disciplines of book and flat paper which involve new techniques and materials have been compiled. Some of these techniques and materials are crossovers from other fields such as paintings conservation, and they reflect an important attitude about the exchange of information outside of one's own area of expertise. Included in these new advances for art on paper are: a method for flattening paper on the vacuum hot table; using a polyester fleece material for air drying paper; uses for a new polyester screen material, e.g., as an aid for making remoistenable backings, as a washing support material, as a slick but permeable material for positioning wet paper prior to backing and for wet pulp fills; and uses for a hot air gun in self-adhesive tape removal and heat seal backing. New advances used in the areas of book and archive conservation are: a non-adhesive binding for paper wrappered books; modifying and/or redesigning traditional bindery equipment; the development of a box-binding model; a folding drying rack for paper; using the computer to produce paper titling labels for books. -- AATA
