Abstract
Several routine applications of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) in forensic science, based on about 900 cases, are described, including examination of very small samples of paint, metals, charred paper and textiles. The ability to examine very small items has increased the amount of material which can be examined in a case, and has added to the value of the evidence presented in court. Paint has provided the most useful results; however, particle distribution can cause anomalies in results. Green paints provide the best results and white paints the poorest, because of the range of pigments and extenders used. EPMA is the best method available for analysing smears of paint on paint, but good results are only obtained with thick smears or when the two paints are very different in composition. -- AATA
