Abstract
Focuses on the care of paper documents, outlining key preservation responsibilities for planning, duplication, environmental control, collections maintenance, and conservation treatment, research, and training. Natural history document collections are found in museums, research institutions, libraries, archives, and private collections. Consequently, the collections may have various values (informational, intrinsic, associational, etc.) and uses (examination, verification, publication, circulation, or display). Different uses expose documents to different hazards, requiring different preservation solutions. The relative value, use, and risk of different collections should be assessed through preservation priority and random sampling condition surveys. A proper assessment requires a knowledge of the nature and deterioration of documents with respect to intrinsic vice, environmental conditions, and handling and storage problems. -- AATA
