Fifteen bronze (or brass) castings from Ife and Benin have been dated by the thermoluminescence technique, applied to remaining casting cores. Both fine-grain and pre-dose methods were used. Dates range from the 13th to the 17th centuries, and seem to bear out the oral tradition of the introduction of lost-wax casting to Benin from Ife at the end of the fourteenth century.
