Abstract
A description is given of how different patterns of twisted damask are produced, i.e. by forge welding together various strips of damask steel, by interrupting twisting, partially under a simultaneous change of the direction of rotation, and by abrading the twist bar. The author explains the structure and significance of damascened blades. The article is concluded by a graphic survey of the different processes involved in producing the patterns of twisted and forge welded swords and other weapons of Western Europe manufacture. -- AATA
