Abstract
The article advises the curator of invertebrates who is responsible for maintaining collections that are not his specialty. Introductory paragraphs stress the importance of collections. Advice is given on the killing and fixation of specimens. Various preservatives are suggested and for which method they are preferable. Accessioning, cataloguing and labelling the specimens are a vital part of the work, and various systems are discussed. It is difficult to find a reliable storage container for wet specimens and any type used must be checked regularly. Dry specimens can be stored in polythene bags, gelatin capsules and glass vials. Cotton wool should not be used for storing spinose or highly ornamented specimens. Storage cabinets should be dust and vermin proof. Paradichlorobenzene and naphthalene are used as fumigants. Advice is given on storing microscope slides. -- AATA
