Abstract
Objects in storage are important for most museological activities. Efficient storage conditions make them easily accessible as well as safe from deterioration. Inorganic materials tend to be more stable than organic materials but will be affected by adverse conditions. This chapter lists different materials -- minerals, stone, ceramics, glass, metals -- and indicates conditions suitable for their storage. Similarly for organic materials the adverse conditions are mentioned and guidelines given for storing: paintings, bone, ivory, antler, wood, hides, leather, fur, textiles, basketry, paper and natural history specimens. Brief advice is given on the type of building preferable for storage and types of suitable racking and shelving. Also see IIC3-3133. -- AATA
