Abstract
Conservation treatments for one material may be harmful to another, posing problems when dealing with composite objects, e.g., polyethylene glycol (PEG) is mildly acidic, so when used to treat waterlogged wood, metals could be corroded; alkaline solutions used to remove chloride ions from iron affect degraded wood. In 1983, testing was done on wood-metal composites, using over sixty aqueous solutions, aiming to both consolidate the wood and slow or stop corrosion of the metal (brass, bronze, copper, lead, and mild steel). Solutions of PEG with corrosion inhibitors, or of resins similar to PEG (but with corrosion-inhibiting functional groups) were considered, focussing on amines (already shown to stabilize archaeological iron, and often commercially available). Pieces were freeze-dried after soaking one month in test solutions. They were evaluated then, and again, after being stored for six years. Results showed thirteen resins that could slow corrosion. Recently, four solutions (Hostacor KSI in PEG-400, Pluracol 824, Witcamine RAD 1100, and Acrysol G-110) were shown to affect some metal corrosion rates. Final results will be published soon.
