Abstract
Special cases may reduce problematic relative humidity (RH) fluctuations in the immediate vicinity of a painting. Materials and their properties are described and recommended for specific situations. Hygroscopic buffering materials include cellulosic materials, silica gel, Art-Sorb beads and sheets and Gore-tex tiles. Backing boards and glazing help to protect the works. A modified frame incorporating a silica gel box creates a microclimate to help regulate RH. Two such frames constructed at the Canadian Conservation Institute are described.
