Abstract
Assesses systems for costume and textile storage, in particular, at the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal, Quebec. The McCord Museum collects only Canadian costume and focuses mainly on Montreal bourgeois attire; the collection is considered one of high quality. Describes storage problems, including lack of funding and/or space, shortage of materials; the frequency of usage, exhibition, handling of the collection; the protection of fragile artifacts; visible storage, mounting textiles in glass cases, providing examples from various museums all over the world; compact mobile storage; literature and overview of collection storage survey; costume and textile storage at the McCord Museum, undergoing major expansion and renovation work. The McCord Museum selected the mechanically controlled compact mobile storage Mobile-o-Matic, by Drummex to house the majority of its costume and textile collection. The advantages and disadvantages of the two systems concerning humidity, environmental factors, insects, etc. are also briefly reviewed.
