Abstract
Art and technology are examined, as an integrated art form, using recent creations as examples. Many scientific developments have contributed to nontraditional art forms, such as computer graphics. Several innovative groups are cited, such as the Experiments in Art and Technology (EAT), Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) and the MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS). CAVS collaborated with artists, developing stroboscopic phenomena and neon sculptures. The book International Directory of Electronic Arts-Art and Technology is cited, which lists institutes and people, dedicated to art and technology synthesis. Electronic, new media is mentioned. With the scanning laser ophthalmoscope, a visual language for the blind is described, where the melding of artistic vision with the scientist's expertise is done in a world of medical, humanistic values. The traditional artists' materials are divided into solids, liquids and gas. Now electronic materials emerge, as immaterials . A Scanning Electron Microscope is described, being used to carve an icon in a salt crystal, to complement a 2.5 km Desert Eye in the Mojave Desert. An algorithm is described, being used to encode a graphic Venus into a synthetic DNA molecule, that is spliced into living bacteria, to duplicate and spread throughout the galaxy.
