Abstract
The traditional lining process used for oil paintings has gradually reached its limits. These reasons are the limitations in the materials themselves and the danger inherent in the process of applying the lining. Therefore, the use of synthetic adhesives for the lining, which is able to address a lot of problems the traditional method has encountered, is slowly gaining popularity. This method offers the possibility of reversibility and reflects the precepts of the minimal conservation treatment philosophy, and is gaining many adherents. In this paper, we studied the problems found in the old lining methods and introduced the new lining methods using synthetic adhesive. A description of the actual use of this new method is also presented. The lining process can be divided into roughly two major steps: the first is the making of a lining adhesive film and the second is the actual lining process itself. We choose a dispersion acrylic adhesive (Plextol B 500; Rohm) whose safety has been documented. This adhesive was then applied to polyester non-woven tissue and once all moisture was evaporated the adhesive film was made. In the previous lining method, because the restorer applied the adhesive directly to the backside of the work meant that later it was very difficult to remove this adhesive completely. But in the event that the adhesive film was used, the adhesive impregnated the non-woven tissue and its removal became much simpler. In addition, there was the advantage that the moisture had been almost completely removed from the dispersion-type adhesive. During the lining process an organic solvent was used to dissolve the prepared adhesive. By using the low-pressur table for lining, the entire surface of the painting received equal pressure and heat. In comparison to the old method in which an iron was used, the new method showed more satisfactory results and was much safer.
