Abstract
Bronze sculptures, which are left exposed to the atmosphere, in general become covered in either green or white lines of bronze rust, then gradually turn dark. In this case, damage to the sculpture will continue with the surface becoming slowly corroded with the piece continuing to darken, and any pigment layers peeling. For these reasons, cleaning and coating is extremely important. By coating an object not only is it protected from harmful atmospheric effects, but also the coating enhances the beauty of the sculpture. In this paper the coating process used for the nine pieces in the Bourdelle Sculpture Garden is detailed. Before this process was undertaken, however, the theoretical background of the coating technique and , utilizing foreign reference materials, a comparison was offered o f the types of coating and their individual characteristics. The nine works in the Bourdelle Sculpture Garden had all lost their basic coating and the patina surface was rough and visible. Green and red stains had appeared when the coating process was begun. This process was as follows. The cleaning process removed the small fragments of rust and other foreign material. After that, the cleaning process was concluded when the sculpture was washed with non-ionic detergent (P&G, Orvus). Wax was applied using a bruch and when this became somewhat dry, bruches and soft cloths were used for polishing. The waxes used in this process included bees wax, carnauba wax and damar resin and oil, which were meaked with solvent. This made the work easier, the coating stronger, and the luster longer lasting.
