Abstract
The 3 methods of protection are: 1. Vapor phase inhibitors; 2. Inhibitors in solution; and 3. Lacquer coatings. The latter gives longer lasting protection for objects being handled and exhibited. 3 types of lacquer, nitrocellulose, silicone and acrylic, were tested in the Conservation Laboratory of the Victoria and Albert Museum for protection against tarnish, resistance to abrasion and ease of application. An acrylic resin, Incralac (British), equivalent to Rohri & Haas Resin No. 344, gave the best results in each category. The 4 abrasion resistance tests used were: 1. Falling sand method; 2. Pencil hardness; 3. Abrasion with blanket cloth; and 4. Abrasion with abrasive paper.
