A neutron activation method for the determination of Ag in ancient coins was devleoped and applied to Muslim dirhams issued in Egypt and Syria in A.D. 1250 to 1517. Only Ag is activated and the radio. activity dissipates within 10 to 15 minutes. The method results in Ag contents valid to ~ Ö5 2%. In order to avoid production of very long half-life ^110mAg, a small neutron source was used for irradiation. The coin was mounted on a Ag disk to ensure more uniform thickness on irregular coins.
