Abstract
New computer software and the creation of integrated museum relational data bases provide powerful new tools for both research and preventive conservation. Technology has to be matched with real data management requirements, and the manpower needed to support the software as well as to operate the system, STIPPLE, running on the IBM System/38, is being used successfully for collections management by the Tate Gallery, London, with the vast majority of operating functions able to be changed by the end users, rather than programmers. -- AATA
