Describes solution of a restoration problem of Chinese miniature paintings on paper. The problem, as faced by the Grabar Russian National Research and Restoration Centre for Works of Art, Moscow, was an inability to identify the paper on which the small works were painted. Research, both technical study of the material itself and in literature, indicated that the material is what is known as Chinese rice paper but of a sort made from the Chinese trees <1Tetrapanax papyrifera or Aralia papyrifera, the term rice paper then being incorrect. Mineral pigments and white lead were used to make the paints; the techinique used for the painting was discovered, and a description of the method by which paper was made from Tetrapanax papyrifera was found. After tests on facsimile paper, a suitable method for restoration was devised.
