Abstract
Sulfuryl fluoride dissolves rapidly in water and may be quickly removed from solution by dynamic a vacuum. The Solubility of the gas has been measured at 0.0 and 23.3°. Hydrolysis of sulfuryl fluoride is slow in water but rapid in basic solution the net reaction being SO<sub>2</sub>F<sub>2</sub> 1 2OH right arrow SO<sub>3</sub>F<sup>-+</sup> F<sup>-+</sup> H<sub>2</sub>O. The rate law may be written as -d(SO<sub>2</sub>F<sub>2</sub>)/dt = (SO<sub>2</sub>*F<sub>2</sub>) (k<sub>w</sub> + k(OH-)). At pH values of 7.5 or greater, k<sub>w</sub> is negligible when compared to k (OH<sup>-</sup>). Over the temperature range 0-25°, k = 1. 67x10<sup>12</sup>e<sup>-13,100</sup> R<sup>T</sup>, when time is in seconds and concentration are in moles per liter. -- CAL
