The purpose of this annotated bibliography is to present a history and guide to the literature of alkoxysilanes as used for the conservation of art and architecture. All books, articles and patents pertaining to this subject and read by the authors have been cited. The literature is mainly concerned with the use of ethyl silicate, partially polymerized ethyl silicate, and methyl (triethoxy)silane or methyl(trimethoxy)silane; these chemicals have been discussed primarily with regard to the treatment of natural stone, but treatments of brick, adobe, wood, paper, textiles, and basketry have also been mentioned.
