The author's view of the solubility parameter is presented with practical suggestions for its use. The construction of solubility diagrams, the fitting of data, and guides for the most economical choice of solvent are given. Use of a relative solvent improvement efficiency factor for active solvents E=delta_A/Cost is suggested as an aid to reaching optimum conditions with a minimum of experimental effort.
