Abstract
To investigate the tarnishing of a silver-gilt buckle, x-ray diffraction (which is non-destructive) was used on one of its three parts and on a replica of it in nitrocellulose. The decomposition products of the niello were removed with the replica, restoring to the gold surface its original brilliance.
