Abstract
Neutron activation analysis is esp. appropriate for nondestructive in vestigations of archaeological objects by identifying through the gamma spectrum of the activated substance its origin, by determining whether 2 obviously identical objects are indeed constituted of the same material or whether a coin is authentic or fake. Amber, a fossil resin also known as succinite, is found at the Baltic coasts of Samland and Jutland and used 5000-3000 years ago for jewelry. The origin of amber beads could not be determined through wet chemical methods. The impurities contained in amber can be activated by reactor neutron irradiation and in 64 samples of Baltic amber certain amounts of Na, Mn, Au have been analyzed and also in 41 Sicilian amber samples besides Zn, Co, Sc, and Fe. The Sicilian Amber contains clearly higher amounts of these impurity elements and a distinction from Baltic amber is possible. Coins can be activated by neutrons, by 30 MeV protons, or by 26 MeV deuterons. The ratio Pb/Ag concn. is determined by x-ray fluorescence. Activation analysis has also been applied -- AATA
