Abstract
The Oberlin Meeting of American conservators in 1971 offered the opportunity to exhibit a selected group of paintings portraying the use of synthetic (1) retouch vehicles and (2) protective and esthetic varnish coatings. As in the investigations of retouch and varnish vehicles, the basic objective continues to be the replacement of the natural materials with the syiithetic and other man-made materials of improved physical and chemical stability. Adhesives were of primary consideration owing to the realization that many were identical or similar materials to those being investigated for retouching vehicles and varnishes. Various adhesives and supports are discussed and conclusions are presented. -- AATA
