Abstract
Conservators and historians may find infrared color photography a useful addition to the available techniques for examination and documentation of works of art. The infrared color film used -- -Kodak Ektachrome Infrared Aero Film Type 8443 -- -was developed in 1962, for use in the aerial detection of camouflage, but many other applications have been found since. (For technical information and bibliography, see Kodak Technical publication M-28: <i>Applied Infrared Photography.) Based on experience with this film the authors anticipate that perhaps its most important application will be in helping to distinguish pigments and thus detecting and documenting restorations or selecting areas where pigment samples should be taken. Ultraviolet photography has often been used as the standard means of recording past restorations. Since thick older varnishes fluoresce brilliantly and are usually applied unevenly, early restorations are often difficult, if indeed impossible, to discern. Infrared color photography enables one to document accurately these restorations since it penetrates these varnishes and differentiates between the restorer's work and the artist's. This latter is possible since the restored areas are usually of different pigments from original even though they may have been intended to match. -- AATA
