Abstract
The portrait was painted on unbleached linen. The fabric is plain weave, and the thread count is: 23 warp by 52 weft -- -per inch. A lining of the same linen, on which the portrait was painted, was glued to the back. The animal glue, used in applying the lining, had become dark brown and very brittle. The side borders of the painting were covered with a black resinous substance -- -perhaps used as part of the attachment to the coffin. The paint was pigment mixed with a water soluble adhesive -- -either gum or glue. Examination showed the following: 1. The linen was extremely dry, stiff and brittle. 2. The portrait had many deep wrinkles, holes and breaks. 3. Some paint was missing and the remaining paint was flaking. The conservation procedure is described in detail with draw -- AATA
