Abstract
The removal of two linings from a Chinese silk textile is described. The outer lining was stitched into position and was removed simply by unpicking the stitching. The inner lining had been positioned by adhering and stitching. After removal of the stitching the adhesive, cellulose nitrate, was softened with acetone vapor. This allowed the backing to be peeled from the textile. However this left a large amount of adhesive on the textile. While still soft some of the adhesive was removed with a scalpel. The removal of the residue using poultices of sepiolite and acetone is discussed.
