Abstract
Discusses methods of protecting tugs, landing craft and rail equipment from sea water and atmospheric exposure at Charleston, S.C., so that this military equipment can be returned to service in case of a national emergency in a minimum of time. Large marine equipment is stored in wet or dry storage with static or dynamic dehumidification. Some equipment is in dry storage with no dehumidification, opened to the atmosphere. Other equipment is stored in warehouses with and without dehumidification. Describes seven types of contact preservatives used to protect equipment being placed in storage to supplement dehumidification. Other preservative materials commonly used include bituminous coatings, pressure sensitive tape and strippable coatings. Presents procedure for storing a 100-foot steel tug. Also gives costs of preparing various types of equipment for dehumidification which range from $710 for a 25-ton railway crane to $2800 for a 100-foot tug.
