Abstract
The processes of corrosion of metal artifacts can be accelerated within the museum environment by the build-up of corrosive vapors in the confines of showcases and storage areas. This problem can be alleviated by testing the materials used for their effect on metals. The corrosive effects of several volatiles were examined and a method for removing volatile organic materials from the atmosphere was considered. An accelerated aging test for materials has been reappraised and several modifications investigated. Many materials used in the construction of showcases and storage areas have been tested for their effect on lead and silver and the results of these tests are given. The implications of this work on display and storage in museums is discussed
