Abstract
Three encaustic wood panel paintings (6th & 7th centuries AD) from the Kiev Museum were analyzed. Physico-optical investigations were made by ultraviolet and infrared photography, and differences in artists' techniques were revealed by a radiogram. Investigation of inorganic materials included detailed ground and pigment analyses using microscopic, microchemical, emission spectroscopic, micro x-ray spectral and x-ray diffraction techniques. Analysis of organic materials was carried out by means of infrared spectroscopy.
