The systematic restoration of sculptures in Japan was begun in 1898 by Nihon-Bijutsuin which was organized by Tenshin Okakura. This organization started its work of restoration by studying ancient techniques. Most of the restorations were documented. The author intends to show the vicissitude of the repairing techniques developed by members of the organization and the traditional and scientific techniques now used. -- AATA
