A kayak owned by the Canadian Museum of Civilization, probably constructed by the Inuit of the Ivuyivik region in northern Quebec and collected from Cap Wolstenholme by Ernest W. Hawkes in 1914, was treated by the author at the Canadian Conservation Institute. The seal skins were flexible but shrunken and torn in many areas. The edges of some of the torn skins were deformed and out of plane with respect to the kayak's original surface, thus requiring realignment. Realignment was difficult in areas with no access to the back of the skins. Three techniques were developed to tackle this problem: 1) if a wooden element of the frame was below the skins and the skins were depressed, pieces of polyethylene foam were inserted to lift the skins; 2) if the skins were lifting and directly against the frame, they were clamped down with stretched Parafilm M® film against a backing of Japanese paper adhered with a mixture of Acryloid B-72 and EHEC® (ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose) in ethanol; and 3) if no elements of the frame were present below the skins, they were partially backed with Japanese paper and the B-72/EHEC mixture and clamped between a tin-plated spatula and magnets, allowing space to remove the spatula. All tears, whether backed or not, were gap-filled with a paper pulp and methylcellulose paste and inpainted with acrylic paints or watercolors. -- AATA
