During the construction of the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City, the remains of six small waterlogged boats dating between 1736 and 1751 were discovered. They were treated by the Centre de Conservation du Quebec between 1984 and 1988. Four flat-bottomed boats were dismantled, transported piece by piece in water basins, washed, documented, and impregnated with PEG 400 raised gradually from 10% to 39% in one year, then freeze-dried using the Canadian winter climate (re: the Grattan, Cook, and McCawley method). A modified drying shelter increased exposure to sunshine and wind, significantly improving drying. Two sailboats were block-lifted and transported to the lab one was dismantled; both were documented, cleaned, placed in a humidity chamber, sprayed with PEG 400 solution for three months, brushed with PEG 540 blend for nearly one year, and dried by decreasing the humidity over two years. The complete boat was placed on a frame during treatment and gradually reshaped. Wood dowels were used to reassemble fractured pieces. Presents tables of degree of PEG penetration in relation to wood species and type of treatment; discusses the measurement of wood moisture content as a function of its depth; and compares longitudinal, tangential, and radial shrinkages for some pieces treated. -- AATA
