Abstract
Ceramic objects comprise a large part of the Antiquities collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Approximately 206 sherds belonging to two Attic red-figure vases attributed to the Polygnotan Group, ca. 340 BC and of south Italian shape were reassembled and treated by the Antiquities Conservation Department of the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1981. The treatment consisted of reduction of the burned bitumen deposits using successive baths of a mixture of n-butylamine and toluene; desalination; joining the sherds with Duco® cement (cellulose nitrate); gap-filling; inpainting the fills with gouache; and coating the fills with airbrush applications of 2.5% Acryloid B-72 in toluene with Syloid 169. A two-part epoxy resin and hardener, Pliacre®, was used for structural fills: the epoxy was rolled out, cut to shape, adhered to the ceramic with Duco® cement and covered with Polyfilla® paste as a surface finish. The two additional gap-filling materials used were a self-sure polymethyl methacrylate resin and a visible light-cured composite, both products manufactured for use in dentistry. To cast some fills and reconstructed parts, Wacher RTV® M-539 was used, a thixotropic silicone mold-making product; polyvinyl alcohol was applied to the ceramic as a barrier and Vaseline® (petroleum jelly) as the release agent. The author also discusses the problematic color integration of the vases' reserve areas and the various questions arising from the vases' unique shapes. The techniques and materials discussed in this case study are representative of those currently used in the conservation of ceramic antiquities at the Getty.
