Abstract
This paper describes tests performed to determine the efficacy of three vapour phase inhibitors (vpi) in preventing further corrosion of copper and copper alloyed samples containing oxide, sulphate and chloride corrosion products. Vpu's protect against metal corrosion, in the presence of moisture and oxygen, through the emission of vapours from a solid or liquid substance. The paper describes the mechanism of vpi protection, the properties of the vpi's tested (zerust, n-butyl benzoate, benzotriazole); the preparation of copper and the four copper alloys tested; the testing procedures (40 degrees centigrade and 100% relative humidity) and corrosion rate monitoring. Discusses results and gives conclusions and recommendations. It is recommended that other methods of corrosion prevention, such as environmental control, be employed in favour of the vpi's tested. Appendix gives a list of vpi's used for copper and its alloys. Materials and suppliers, tables, 51 references.
