An anglo-saxon helmet constructed from iron plates with brass fittings was found in waterlogged conditions in a remarkable state of preservation. As it was thought the helmet might contain the remains of a leather or textile cap, it was necessary to hold the helmet and contents while further discussion and research took place. Damp storage in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen) was chosen. The technique, which is described, worked well and the helmet was held for five weeks. Diagram of apparatus, 8
