This article describes, with a great many illustrations, the old techniques of pattern-welding, the etching of armour, the Damascus blade, oriental and Japanese methods. The distinction is clearly made between patterns produced by welding several pieces of metal together (pattern-welding), and patterns produced by manipulation of the crystalline structure of the metal. The Japanese sword is considered the supreme example of metallurgical art.
