Conservation of ethnographic items requires the conservator to have detailed understanding of visual form, material composition, and cultural use. The acquisition method of the material neglects documentation; generally only the most durable goods are acquired from a particular cultural group. It is recommended that the conservator be involved in field studies and collecting activities and to work with an anthropologist familiar with the area to record the technology and carry out on-site conservation work.
