Abstract
Discussion focuses upon the new roles of natural sciences in the museum's curatorial function: the research laboratory -- for studying the history and technology of objects; the conservation laboratory -- for improving conservation techniques; and environmental control -- for determining the best conditions under which to preserve the collection. Communication problems existing between scientist and curator are caused by attitudinal differences. The relationship of the central conservation laboratory to the museum is also discussed.
