Abstract
One-hundred feet in height the Towers of Simon Rodia in Watts make up the largest and most complex sculpture in Southern California. A stabilization program was undertaken starting in 1978 to reinforce cracking members and to replace essential missing supports. In spite of serious problems and an accelerating rate of decay the Towers are in surprisingly good condition when viewed in light of the meager resources and dissimilar materials employed by the artist. Deterioration processes affecting the mortar steel, ceramics, glass, shell and stone are discussed. The treatment methods and the considerations involved in selecting them are described.
