Extremely discolored and solvent sensitive inks were found on three lithographs from an edition of Andy Warhol’s A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu portfolio, which complicated their treatment. Research confirms that the lithographs were painted with Dr. Ph. Martin’s Synchromatic Transparent Watercolors which are highly fugitive brightly colored inks. FTIR analysis suggests that the inks are mixtures including xanthene, triarylmethane, and monoazo dyes, and many of them are similar to common food colors. Fading tests indicate that these inks are among the most light sensitive media for works of art on paper, and further examination into the mechanism and rapid fading of these inks will be conducted. Options for treatment, storage, and display for works that use these inks are also presented. -- MCI
