Abstract
This paper presents the treatment of a large 19th-century map of Prince Edward Island. When received, the map was extremely degraded: the paper support had fragmented into many thousands of small pieces due to its brittleness and a history of poor storage and handling. In addition, the primary support was varnished with discolored shellac and adhered to a greatly weakened fabric backing. The treatment included in this paper presents a successful technique for treating such a map which requires washing, varnish removal, backing removal, and lining onto a new secondary support. It is a treatment which could be undertaken by one conservator with minimal assistance in a typical paper conservation lab. -- MCI
